THE PROGRAM
US Sailing Accredited Instruction
The Lorain Boating Education Foundation — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that partners with LHBC — offers US Sailing-accredited Adult Basic Keelboat courses each summer. The curriculum follows the nationally standardized US Sailing program and is taught by US Sailing-certified instructors on board LHBC's club-owned keelboats.
The course is designed for complete beginners with no prior sailing experience, though those with some background also benefit from the structured curriculum. By the end of the course, students have the skills to skipper a small keelboat in familiar waters with crew. US Sailing certification is awarded on completion.
Instruction takes place on Lake Erie and in the Black River basin, giving students experience in both sheltered harbor conditions and open-water sailing. Classes are intentionally small — typically 6 students per boat — to maximize hands-on time.
2026 SCHEDULE
Two Sessions in 2026
June Session
June 6 – June 18, 2026
Our traditional June session. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6–9 PM) plus one full Saturday. Ideal for those who prefer a relaxed two-week schedule.
- 6 evening sessions + 1 full Saturday
- Class size: 6 students maximum
- Prerequisite: swim test on day one
August Session
August 1 – August 8, 2026
A brand-new compressed format for those who can't make the June dates. Daily instruction over eight consecutive days, including two full-day on-water sessions.
- 8 consecutive days including weekends
- More intensive schedule; faster completion
- Class size: 6 students maximum
COST
Tuition and Fees
- Tuition: $350 per student (includes US Sailing certification fee)
- Scholarships available: Contact the Foundation for financial assistance
- US Sailing membership: Not required, but optional $25 membership available at registration
- Required materials: US Sailing Basic Keelboat textbook (~$30, available for purchase at registration)
- Deposit: $100 to hold your spot; balance due first day of class
REQUIREMENTS
Who Can Participate
- Adults 18 and older (minors 14+ with a parent/guardian enrolled in the same class)
- Must be able to swim (test administered on day one)
- No prior sailing experience required
- Physical ability to step on and off a docked keelboat

Clothing
- Non-marking soft-soled shoes (required on board)
- Layers for variable weather
- Rain gear or windbreaker
- Sunglasses with straps
- Hat with brim

- Personal flotation device (PFD) — club has loaners, but you may bring your own
